The Gypsy Horse breed
Such a hard-working and docile horse
The Gypsy Cob is called Gysy Vanner Horse in the USA, Irish Cob in France and Tinker in Germany.
The Gypsy Cob is a horse created and used by the gypsies/travellers of Ireland and Great-Britain for
pulling their wagons. It's a small draft horse with full mane, tail and feathers. It comes from a
combination of British and Irish breeds such as Shire, Clydesdale and Dales pony. The gypsy horse is a
small cob or pony type, powerful and compact, medium to heavy boned. It usually stands between 13.2
hh and 15 hh tall. Extremely large horses (over 16 hh) are called Drum Horses and are considered a
separate breed.
The gypsy horse is well-known for his delightful temperament and hard-working nature. As a true
member of the family, the gypsy horse must be intelligent enough to remain docile around children and
have the endurance and strengh to pull a heavy wagon all day.
Today, gypsy cobs make wonderful all-round horses for both driving and riding.
Origins
Gysies don't write down blood of a horse, they don't use a registry. The history on blood of gypsy horses
is only oral. However, the gypsy cob is a true breed, bred for generations.
A true gypsy horse is a horse bred by gypsies, that will have generations of breeding behind it. It will
have blood from a preserved and protected bloodline well-known among gypsy breeders.
In Europe/France, most gypsy cobs are registred with the Irish Cob Stud-Book (The Netherlands) or
with ECHA (Germany).

The more, the better... True gypsy horses have hair covering the front of the hoof and starting from the
knee.

in the USA come from Coates Gypsy Horses.
